Answers to Frequently Asked Questions #'s Six, Seven & Eight

# 6 : Where in the Bible does it talk about praying in tongues.

Jesus said to the disciples. ".. you shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, and you shall be witnesses unto me in Judea, .... and unto the uttermost parts of the earth" Acts 1:8 In Acts 2:1-5 we read "And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, ..... there came a sound from heaven like a rushing might wind, .... and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and spake with tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. " Tongues was one of the first evidences of the Holy Spirit's presence in the lives of the disciples as per Jesus promise.

# 7 : Why would you want to pray in tongues anyway?

The purpose of tongues is to edify yourself. 1 Cor 14 : 4 "He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself. .... " The Apostle Paul taught that tongues is for the edification of the believer. Paul said in 1 Cor 14:40 "covet to prophesy and forbid not to speak with tongues "

There are two kinds of tongues. One is your prayer language, to edify yourself and the other is the "gift of tongues and interpretation of tongues" and is for the edification, exhortation and comfort of the church. There are two ways to pray. Pray in tongues and pray in your own language. The one comes from your spirit and the other comes from your understanding or mind. Vs 14 "For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. " In other words, you can pray in the spirit even when your mind or thoughts are not able to or are unfruitful. Paul did both. Vs 15 "What is it then? I will pray with the Spirit and I will pray with the understanding also. " So do both. Pray with what is in your mind and when you find you are not gaining any ground pray in the spirit. I do both and have done so for 30 years. It is great.

Paul spoke in tongues. Vs 18 "I thank my God, I speak with tongues more that ye all. "

# 8 : Can anyone pray in tongues after they have been Baptized in the Holy Ghost?

Yes you can pray in tongues after you have received the Holy Spirit. Tongues is your prayer language. It is needed when you do not know how to pray in english. Have you ever tried to pray in english and it seemed that you were getting nowhere fast. It seemed like your words were meaningless and going nowhere. That is when your heavenly prayer language should take over. Remember Paul said, "When I pray in tongues, my mind is unfruitful. " 1 Cor 14:14 That means tongues doesnt depend on how you are feeling or thinking. It is like a hot line to heaven. The Spirit is praying through you directly to God and praying acording to the will of God for your life.

I encourage you to exercise your heavenly tongue that God gave you. It will edify and build you up.
